Westport Community Youth Performing Arts Initiative

Westport Town Hall continues its focus on the development of a Community Youth Performing Arts Initiative, which has already had some dedicated workshops here in the facility resulting in very positive feedback. In partnership with Mayo County Council, this initiative was the headline focus for Culture Night 2015 with live performances that included students from local Secondary Schools in the artistic spheres of music & drama. Additionally during the Westport Arts Festival, the initiative put on a self-run interactive storytelling session for children and admission was free to the event.

Another interactive story-telling session was run for the Rolling Sun Book Festival in November which involved 6th class students from Knockrooskey National School who acted out a story of their choice in the auditorium for a large audience.

The Initiative started off with 15 members aged from 7 up to 16 and produced their first theatrical show “Ebony Scrooge” which was staged at the Theatre as part of the “Spraoi Na Nollag” Community Christmas event in December 2015. The community youth initiative membership is steadily increasing for 2016, with the participants currently working on a new productions as well as building their own puppet theatre with the help of a couple of local artists. They continue with storytelling and stage performances involving more schools in 2016 and beyond. Ultimately, the aim is to see the youth run their events from the Town Hall, obviously with our support and guidance and that of the surrounding schools.
