In 2010, a whole school string program project was undertaken in Gaelscoil Na Cruaithe primary school in Westport. The objective of the program was to equip students after 8 years of study with a minimum grade 2 level in string playing. The project began with junior and senior infants, and first class students numbering 80 in the first year. Teaching material for each classes was produced during this time, resulting in a complete tutorial series of books written by Patrick Early. Today there are almost 200 students on the program taking home sized violins to practice on.
In June 2017, the first cohort of students which had completed the program left the school to go their separate ways at second level. Anticipating this, the Octagon Ensemble was formed in 2016 in association with Westport Town Hall Theatre, with the aim of providing past pupils with a forum to meet and play with other musicians. Currently this 18-piece string orchestra is made up of enthusiastic amateurs who live in the area and students from the school program who wish to continue playing together.
This concert on June 12th will be their 4th public performance at the theatre since their formation in 2016. Support of this group is most appreciated by both the Orchestra and Westport Town Hall Theatre. Come and enjoy the fruits of their musical labour and see how much this group continue to go from strength to strength!
