“Music… gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” – Plato
Traditional Irish music was part of my everyday life growing up. I chose this as my subject matter.
I set out to explore movement in musicians and dancers. Movement for me not only comprises physical gestures. It encapsulates the spirit, fervour and exhilaration of the musician immersed in the moment which has the potential to activate a similar response in the dancer. In the dancer, the physical movement of limbs is easily observed. Though not as visible in the musician who may be sitting in one position, movement pervades every fibre of his/her being. This vibrant current in both dancer and musician is the energy and passion in their absorption of what they are engaged in. As much as in the movement of limbs, it can be seen in the intensity of concentration on the face, a chance look, a gaze, a glance, the tilt of a head or the angle of the body. This is the movement I wanted to capture.
I collected images by sketching and photographing musicians and dancers at music sessions and parties and images on television and online.
I invite you, the viewer, to connect with your own dynamism and joy
