Cruinniú na nÓg event: Woke Folk – Songs of Resistance and Freedom for young people
With Edward Hopkinson and Westport Youth Choir

Woke Folk is an a capella song workshop for 14-18 year olds, looking at the way that music has been used to encourage and unify movements of political change throughout history. Challenging the perception of music as purely for entertainment or commercial gain, the workshop will emphasise song as a tool for change and empowerment, with particular focus on the anti-apartheid movement, the civil rights movement in the US, the early labour movement, and the women’s and environmental movements. Songs will be taught in multiple-part harmony with the assistance of young singers from Westport Youth Choir, facilitated by local musician Edward Hopkinson. In the words of Bernice Johnson Reagon – “Everyone should learn these songs, because you never know when you might need them!”

The workshop will conclude with a short public peformance, participation in which is open to all attendees. Note there is a small cover fee of €6.

This event is part of Cruinniú na nÓg, the national day of creativity for young people. The support of Creative Ireland, and Mayo County Council is gratefully acknowledged.
